Behind the Scenes With Holly
Being backstage with a ballet company like the Royal Danish Ballet, is something I had never in my wildest dreams been able to imagine. Working with The Royal Theatre for an entire season, and getting the permission to photograph the dancers and develop this ballet project has been absolutely surreal, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity that I was given. And getting to know the dancers, like Holly, is the icing on the cake.
Ballet is as much about the in-between-movements as it is about perfect lines and stunning, gracious poses. It's about the transitioning from one pose to the next, and the perfect control the dancers are demonstrating. If you ever try to photograph dancers this will become very clear. You will need to count with the them, try to anticipate the phrases in the choreography through listening to the music, and to catch them in the split second that the pose is at its very peak! When you follow along backstage with the dancers all of this disappears, and you are left with the person inside the dancer. The joy and anticipation, the frustration, persistence and ambition, and you want to capture all of it. To show that behind the endless hours of rehearsing, preparation of shoes, waiting and stretching, there is an incredibly strong and dedicated person. Holly is incredibly sweet, dedicated and talented, and I'm so happy that I got to know her through this project. I'm looking so much forward to seeing her on stage again very soon! These dancers are superstars, and she shines so bright, both on and off stage.
